Custom Embossed Linen Photo Books
Beautiful Photo Books Are Expensive (or Missing Something)
After years of testing different photo book companies, I finally found one I loved: Blurb.
Here’s why it stood out:
High page count (perfect for multi-year albums)
Linen cover options
Easy-to-use editing software
And a price point that made long-term memory keeping realistic
It felt like I had found the one…
Except for one thing.
👉 They don’t offer embossed linen covers.
And if you’ve ever seen albums from companies like Artifact Uprising or MILK Books, you know how beautiful that detail is.
That simple, minimal embossing—your family name, a year, a volume number—takes a photo book from nice to heirloom.
I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Blurb only offered blank linen covers with dust jackets. For a while I was okay with just displaying my book with the dust jacket or as a linen book with a blank cover.
But then I stumbled into the solution.
The Breakthrough: A Simple DIY Hack
One night, I fell down a rabbit hole of bookbinding videos. Basically these skilled book-binders rip off the old covers of their favorite novels and create a entirely new covers using cardboard, fabric and an assortment of tools.
Then they use Canva to design the title in vinyl and adhere it to their book.
Here is the video that sucked me into this world (she is re-binding one of my favorite series!!)
As I watched video after video and almost dropped hundreds of dollars launching myself into a new hobby, it clicked…
👉 I could use this method to create custom embossed covers for my photo books!!!!
What I Did (Step-by-Step)
Here’s exactly how I tested it:
I designed a simple sheet with each of my Archive Year spans in canva.
I had a friend cut the design using gold vinyl on her Cricut
I practiced on an old book first (highly recommend this)
Then I carefully heat-pressed the design onto my linen photo book covers
And…
It Worked
I now have:
Affordable, high-page-count albums
Beautiful linen covers
AND custom “embossed” details on the spine
They look like high-end heirloom books—but cost a fraction of the price.
Here is a video of me doing one of my books!
Why This Changes Everything for Memory Keeping
This tiny hack removed the last barrier for me.
Now I can:
Print consistently every year
Create a cohesive, beautiful archive
And actually enjoy seeing my photo books displayed in my home
Because when something is both beautiful and doable, you stick with it.
And that’s what really matters.
