How Daily Journalling Changed my Motherhood

Two years ago, my husband gifted me a Flecks of Gold Journal. The tagline on their website describes their journal as “A one-line-a-day journal to help you feel the magic in your motherhood.” As someone who is always looking for new ways to enjoy motherhood, I was immediately intrigued. The journal has 365 pages; one page for each day of the year, with three spaces on each page for three different years.

My first entry was on January 1st, 2023. I recorded something simple like my daughter turning her two shoes into two people and animating them in the back seat of our Prius.

Simple, adorable, & SOOO fun to read two years later!

Since then, I’ve recorded something (almost) every day and when I’d miss days I use my journal prompt list to “catch up.”

As I recorded something small everyday, I realized I was experiencing more magic in all the small moments.

I am now on my third year of recording something everyday and am so grateful for the way it boosts my enjoyment of motherhood.

I’m also so thrilled to have so many little moments with my kids documented.

Because honestly? I have the worst memory. And there are so many moments I think I couldn’t possibly forget, that I do!

This journal has become invaluable to our family. We have stories recorded that make us laugh, things our kids said that are hilarious and tender moments that make all the daily parental sacrifices 10000% worth it.

In my latest Photo Book Archive Volume, I included my journal entires to make our books even more meaningful and fun to look through. It took me hours to type up each entry to add to our album, so I decided to switch to digital journaling so I don’t have to type up everything at the end of the year..

I really believe all of us are experiencing these magical moments, we just don’t always realize it until we start writing them down.

You don’t need to buy a fancy journal, you can just start a note on your phone right now and start recording small, every day moments.

You’ve got this!

And just for fun…here are a few recent entries that I know we will enjoy for decades to come. I realize these aren’t as fun for random people to read, but they are invaluable to us!

(I’ll leave out their names)

“After cleaning the front room **** asked for a treat. Jacob responded, “Did you know giving you a treat takes away the good feeling for hard work?” And to that she replied “I’m okay with that.””

“**** told me after preschool today, “Did you know who I am going to marry? Mccade.” I asked why and she responded, “because he’s nicer.”

“Today we sang the Hymn on page 66 and **** leans over with a grin and whispered, “I wish we were singing 67.”

“I think I do have a cold because I’ve been doing “bless you” a lot.”

“I wish the bad guys in shows were real so I could punch them.”

**** has been using her high chair as a stool and pushes it around the house to get where she needs. Yesterday she used it to reach some chocolate I had sitting on the counter.

I created journal prompts to help you get going and for days you feel like you have nothing to write! Snag it below! (It’s free!)
