The Beauty of Motherhood (Captured in Black & White)
Once a month I host Motherhood Mini Sessions in my home.
These sessions are simple, playful, and full of love. My goal each time is the same: to document the love between a mother and her children.
And it never disappoints.
Maternal love is one of the most visible, tangible things in the world. With just a few gentle prompts, moms begin cuddling, laughing, and playing with their kids—and suddenly the room fills with warmth and connection.
The love just pours out.
But one of my favorite parts is watching the children.
Many of the mothers I photograph have several kids, and it’s always sweet to see how excited each child becomes when it’s their turn with mom. For a few minutes they get her undivided attention.
They lean in closer.
They giggle more.
They hold on a little tighter.
They soak it up.
And those moments create photographs that take my breath away.
Why I Photograph Motherhood in Black & White
Most of my motherhood sessions are photographed in black and white.
Without color, there’s nothing to distract from what really matters:
the connection, the emotion, the way a child looks at their mother.
Black and white photography lets you feel the moment more deeply. It draws your eyes straight to the love in the image.
The Moment That Changed How I Saw Myself as a Mother
A few years ago for Mother’s Day, I asked my husband to photograph me playing on the floor with our daughters.
After we finished I immediately, I loaded the photos onto my computer.
And I was completely blown away.
Not because the photos were technically perfect—but because of the emotion he captured.
For the first time, I saw myself the way my children must see me.
In that moment I pushed aside every critical thought about my own imperfections—physical or otherwise—and simply saw my beauty as a mother.
It was powerful.
Why I Photograph Mothers
That experience changed something in me.
Now my goal is simple:
I want as many women as possible to feel what I felt that day.
To see themselves the way their children see them.
To recognize the love that surrounds them.
To see the beauty of motherhood reflected back to them.
Because it’s already there.
Sometimes it just takes a photograph to reveal it.
If you’ve ever wanted timeless photos with your children, I would love to photograph you.
