Newborn Session on 35mm Film
In-home Newborn Session on Film in Utah County
Last year I had the opportunity to capture this sweet family right after they welcomed their son into this world. It was my first session exclusively on 35mm film.
When shooting on a digital DSLR camera, I can see the images I'm capturing in real time and know how things are turning out. When shooting on a film camera, everything is a mystery until the film gets developed and the scans show up in my email.
Everything about the Roger home was perfect for our newborn session. Chloe is a stunning homemaker, and being in her home just for our short hour together was inspiring!
We captured most of our images in their bedroom because it was the room with the most light, then finished the session on their front porch. It was such a fun, easy session. I knew I only had 36 exposures so we went slow and took our time. The experience of shooting with digital vs film is so different. When shooting with a digital camera I take 300+ images and then cull that down to around 100 I edit and deliver to my clients. With film, I am only capturing 36 moments, so each one is incredibly intentional. The slower pace is something I love.
After finishing this session, I immediately dropped off the film at the Find Lab in Provo. I remember waiting anxiously and checking my email 100x times until I finally got the email saying “your scans are ready!” After downloading the zip file, I was shocked by how beautiful the session turned out.
Film is special because its not about perfection, is about connection.
Images captured on 35mm film help me feel something. They remind me that photography is truly an art. Instead of finding the best images out of 300 shots, we love and appreciate the 36 exposures we patiently captured.
I am so close to switching to shoot exclusively on film and selling my big fancy DSLR camera. It’s a different experience that I think people will be more and more drawn to.
